Jack N' Me

Well gotta funny story for you so tell me if there is any logic to it or just a coincidence. Went out with rob last night to dinner then bowling. Only consumed 1014 calories in food so I could save some calories for a little Jack Daniels. Well I consumed the rest of my daily colories in liquor! Thats about 1000 calories. Did my colorie count analyzer and it gave me an A for the day. Make sence? I must say I feel good today in the sence that my body doesn't feel like I went out and ate a ton of junk food. Guess my weigh in will tell the tale in the a.m. Are calories just calories? are some better/worse than others? Do tell!

There's definitely "empty" calories like the Jack & Diet Cokes you were drinking last night, and I was going to go into the whole thing with you, but I figured I'd save it for later.

Basically, you can't live on 1000 calories of Jack Daniels ALL the time, because there is no nutritional value to it at all. It's kind of like white bread (minus the liver damage). It's a complete waste, and especially as you and I are starting to work out HARD, you need nutrition in those calories.

For example, if you went out, had 1000 calories of food and 1000 calories of Jack on a Sunday night, and then you and I worked out hard on Monday, it would destroy you. You wouldn't have the nutrients to back you up.

Some of these guys have MUCH better scientific answers for this, so I'll leave it up to them. The bottom line is, your body NEEDS the nutrients that you won't find in Jack Daniels, no matter HOW good your Karaoke voice is ;)

I completely agree with what Rob said, but I wanted to add something that the trainer at the gym told me. We were asking her about how different foods affect our weigh-ins, and she said that you may see an increase on the scale if you've consumed carbs and sodium. I believe that Jack falls under the carb category?

that sounds cool but is it okay once in a while

If by "once in a while" you mean every few weeks, then sure. If you mean every Friday and Saturday night, I think you're shooting yourself in the foot.

I've managed to lose weight by drinking every weekend (although I went a month without). You just need to be careful.

Basically, alcohol is it's own thing. It doesn't fall under the category of any of the macronutrients (Carbs, protein, fat). If you consider that Jack Daniels is probably around 50% alcohol, the other 50% is probably carbs.

The thing about alcohol is this: your body can't store it as fat. Sounds great, right? Wrong. What that means is that while your body is burning the alcohol, it's storing up all the other stuff you ate, as well as the carbs that are in whatever you are drinking (if youre drinking beer, it's mostly carbs, little alcohol).

Another drawback is like Rob said, no nutritional value, and also alcohol consumption tends to decrease testosterone and increase cortisol levels, both of which are bad for your body's ability to build muscle and burn fat.

Add to that the fact that drinking inhibits willpower, hangovers beg for greasy foods, and the next day you won't feel like working out, it can be very dangerous.

My advice: Go without drinking if you can, at least to prove you can do it. Then, if you must, drink hard liquor straight, with ice, and don't overdo it. Eat a little less to make up for the calories, don't get too drunk, and don't eat ANYTHING while/after you are drinking.

THERE ARE NO CARBS IN JACK DANIELS, or any other Bourbon Whiskey!
