Well has anyone out there quit smoking. I did monday and although I've had a few about 8 all week, my body is going crazy. No more crappy food and no nicotine holy smokes my body is not happy. Think it might be going into shock:) I don't know if it was a good idea to change everything at once but I really saw no point doing step classes and cardio and then fire up when I was done. I know I'll be fine but food and nicotine were my crutches so now I guess I'm forced to stand on my own. READY OR NOT HERE I COME!!!!

I'm proud of you big time for the smoking thing, Gary. We come for a LONG line of smokers in our family. You'll feel TONS better for it.
Just think of it like you're getting used to a cold pool of water. If you tiptoe, and do things slowly, it's torture.
Just DIVE right in. You'll adapt.
See you in the morning.
Ok, I think I'm actually going to possibly disagree with Rob on this one. That is a LOT to try to change all at once. I definitely think they both have to be done, but I'm worried that you'll give up on both if you get too frustrated. Plus, we all know that smokers usually gain weight after quitting.
That being said...I wonder if a detox kit would help at all. What about the Master Cleanse that I've been hearing about.
GOOD LUCK with whatever you decide! I'm pretty sure that the smoking is worse for you, but I've had two very young friends die from cancer in the past year, so it's a subject close to my heart.
Does anyone else have thoughts on what is worse...smoking or obesity? I'm sure the combination is just dreadful. Sorry if this was a downer comment... I really do wish you luck.
You know, Kristen, it's hard to say what's worse. They're both hazardous to your health and cause multiple problems.
As far as stopping cold turkey on both junk food AND smoking, I think it depends on the person. Some people do best with the all-or-nothing approach while others need to take it a step at a time.
With the diet, make sure you've got substitutes for your "crutches". When you're craving sugar, grab some fruit. When you're craving something salty, grab a pickle. If you can curb those cravings, then maybe everything else will be a little easier to push through.
Good luck, Gary. You can do this! :)
Being that he's my cousin, I like Gary's outlook on this whole thing. When we talk, he takes a common sense approach. It's not really "I am going to quit because it's bad for you", as much as it is "I'm going to quit because WHY IN THE HELL am I going to work so hard in the gym and then inhale smoke or cheeseburgers?"
It's a realistic approach - and I don't doubt for a second that he will be done for good on both - soon.
No pressure, Cuz. ;)
